(February 16, 2007. "Spirit"*) Sisters Margie and Norma have always been close. “She is my best friend,” says Norma about her sister, “We have shared many things over the years, including all of the triumphs and all of the struggles.” One of the struggles they share was a constant battle with weight loss.
When weight began to affect their health and quality of life, the two sisters shared help from bariatric surgeon Dr. Manuel Castro.
“Dr. Castro had an excellent reputation in El Paso,” said Norma, who worked side by side with Dr. Castro as a community volunteer, “He is one of those unique individuals who knows the importance of giving back. He cares about his patients and his community.”

July 24, 2008: I had my 7 month follow up appointment with Dr. Castro and I am now 13 pounds away from my goal weight of 125. I've lost 71 pounds and I am VERY HAPPY! I no longer have sleep apnea and I am out of danger of becoming diabetic. Before surgery my sugar levels were getting too high for me. My health has improved 1000%. I have so much energy and feel so much lighter. What I think is funny though, sometimes I do still think of myself as the same heavy person that I was before. I think that that is something that will stay on my mind for a while.
